DIY Floor Pillow

A while ago I pinned a tutorial on how to make a floor pillow and after reading Mandy's post about it, it seemed like a sewing project I could handle.  That is, unless I had to thread the sewing machine by myself.  Which did end up happening.  But thanks to two YouTube videos, I was back up and running.  It was a close one.

To get started, I chose two patterns of fabric.  As I mentioned in this post, I originally wanted a black and white striped rug but haven't found the perfect one just yet.  I settled on a super inexpensive red one so I'm bringing the stripes into the room by way of fabric.

I bought two yards of the striped and one yard of the polka dotted.  I found them both at Ikea.  This was my first time purchasing fabric there and I have to say I'm very pleased with the quality.  These two in particular are sturdy and perfect for the wear and tear a floor pillow will endure.

I'll do my best to give you directions that make sense, but I'll be honest, I'm not a seamstress and I don't know the lingo.  I tried to take pictures of important steps along the way which will probably be way more helpful than any words I have to say.

Step 1:  Cut two 30x30 inch squares of fabric and four 10x30 inch rectangles of the opposite fabric.

Step 2:  Lay one of the rectangles (face down) on top of the square (face up) so the edges meet up.  Pin it and sew it.

Step 3:  Repeat step 2 until all four rectangles are sewn to the square.

Step 4:  It's time to attach the second square to one of the rectangles.  Lay the square face down onto the piece above.  Make sure the edges match up with the edges of one rectangle.  Pin it and sew it.

Step 5:  Continue sewing one rectangle edge to the edge of the new square until all rectangles are attached.  Each corner will be open after this step is completed.

Step 6:  Sew three corners shut.

Step 7:  Flip it right side out and stuff it.

Step 8:  Hand sew the last corner shut.  Bam!  A giant floor pillow.

Step 9:  Enjoy!

Charley couldn't stop laying her head on it and saying "awww".  I'll take that as a good sign.  I know I love it in the room, that's for sure.  The patterns and colors are so bold and fit perfectly under the book tree.

If I can do it, you can do it.  Happy sewing! Pin It

  1. You did it!! It looks awesome!!

  2. How much stuffing did you use? And what type -- about to make 3 Christmas gifts.

    1. I actually had two euro shams (the large square pillow shams) that weren't being used. I cut those open and used all of the cotton stuffing from inside both shams. It seemed like enough at the time but it could use a little more after months of use.

  3. I love your pillow and wand to make one. How do I access Mandy's post- you are the second person who has referenced her posts regarding large floor pillows however I cannot. Thanks so much for your instructions!

    1. Just click on the words "Mandy's post" in my blog post and it should be a link to her blog. Thanks for reading and good luck!
