Let There Be Light

We've been wanting to switch out the light fixtures in the kitchen for a while now, and we finally got around to doing it this week.  We didn't mind the previous fixtures, we just needed more light and wanted a more industrial look.

Here's the light that used to hang above the kitchen table.  The ones that hung in the actual kitchen area are the same, just smaller.

I picked out inexpensive fixtures at Ikea-two Ottava Pendant Lamps and one Foto Pendant Lamp.  The link to the Foto Pendant is a slightly different version than the one we found in the store.  We actually got the 20" pendant that you wire into the ceiling, not the one you plug into the wall.

So B.J. and I were thinking this would be a quick switcharoo.  Notsomuch.  Removing the old lights and wiring the new lights=easy peasy.  Actually hanging the new lights=a pain in our you know whats.  We couldn't get the ceiling cup to stay flush with the ceiling.  It doesn't get attached to it in any way and the extra cord that was shoved up there was weighing it down.  B.J. would get on the ladder and try everything to make it stay, then use some choice words when it didn't, then threaten to rip it out of the ceiling, and that's when I would take his place.  I'd try everything to make it stay, then use some choice words when it didn't, then threaten to rip it out of the ceiling.  This went on for a while.  B.J. finally decided to head to Lowe's for some wire cutters, cut a chunk of the cord off, and try again.  It worked!  Thank goodness because we were at our wit's end.

Luckily, we're super happy with how they look.

Here's a pic from our New Year's Eve party with the lights on.

The kitchen is a much brighter place than is used to be!

  1. Oh, I love the lights! I have been wanting a new one over my kitchen table..exactly what I was looking for. In my kitchen though I have a fan/light and I'm not ready to give up the gets so hot in summer. The lights wouldn't match then. I don't know why I didn't think of Ikea?!?!? For some reason though Ikea totally intimidates me; guess it is because I get lost there! You are so lucky to have a husband who cares about your home style and tries to help! Good job Liz and BJ!!!
